The Europeans were seeking to colonize the new world because they were looking to gain as much power as they could.  Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, and Spain or the European powers wanted to get the most land as they could for power.  This was known as the Scramble for Africa.  Later on the Europeans held what was called the Berlin Conference which set rules for splitting up the continent and this included opening major rivers to trade, establishing regions to control, and abolishing slavery.
This also led to disregarding their classic ethnic lines.  The Europeans tore apart ethnicities and mixed different ones together.  Some ethnicities that were pushed together were rivals.  What the Europeans did was called colonialism.  This is the effort of one country to establish settlements and to impose its political, economic, and cultural principles.
European states made colonies in other parts in the world for three reasons.  European missionaries established colonies to promote Christianity.  Colonies provided resources that helped the economy of European states.  Also European states considered the number of colonies to be an indicator of relative power.  The three reasons can be summarized as God, gold, and glory.

Wallerstein’s World System’s Theory has 5 stages.  The First stage is traditional society.  A traditional society has a very percentage of people engaged in agriculture.  The second stage is the Transitional stage.  The process of development starts with an elite group that initiates in economic activities.  The country starts to invest in new technology and also water supplies and transportation systems.
The third stage is The Takeoff.  These few takeoff industries in this stage have a limited number of economic activities like textiles and also food products.  But, what they do achieve is technical advances and become productive unlike other sectors of the economy are still dominated by the traditional practices.  The fourth stage is the drive to maturity.  This is where the workers become more skilled.
The fifth stage is the age of mass consumption.  This is when the economy shifts from production of heavy industry like steel and energy to consumer goods like cars and refrigerators. This model assumes that LDC’s will develop by moving from an early stage to a later stage. The United Sates for example was in stage one and became stage 2 in the first half of the nineteenth century then the third stage in the middle of the nineteenth century and then stage 4 in the late 1900’s and finally the 5th stage in the early twentieth century.
