Extra Credit Essays for First Nine Weeks (Three Paragraphs)

Chapter 1
1a  Explain the differences between formal, functional and perceptual regions (pg. 3 Big Ideas Packet)

1b  What are the differences between environmental determinism, possibilism, environmental perception and human as modifiers. (pg. 4 BIP and book)

1c  If you had to open an Outback Steakhouse in India, how would you use stimulus diffusion to make that work. (pg. 5 BIP)

1d  How does the Internet affect Time-Space Compression? Does it have the biggest effect of any invention in history? Why or why not? (pg. 6)

Chapter 2
2a  What are the main ways that popular culture and folk culture are different? (pg. 10 Big Ideas Packet)

2b  Why are differences in latitude more significant than differences in longitude? (pg. 9 BIP)

2c  Looking at choropleth maps, symbol maps, isoline maps and cartogram maps, what are they, and why might a geographer choose to use some of those over others of those? (pg. 11 BIP)

2d  Explain why distance, direction, shape and size are sometimes distorted on flat maps. Give examples of maps that distort each one of these and explain why the map makers chose to do that. (pg. 12)

Chapter 3
3a  How are Stage 1 and Stage 4 of the Demographic Transition Model similar? How are they different? (pg. 14 Big Ideas Packet)

3b  How is arithmetic density different than physiological density? Which is more useful? Why? (pg. 15 BIP)

3c  Why do the population pyramids of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Honolulu, Hawaii look different than the population pyramids of Detroit, Mich. and Laredo, Texas? What does this tell us about these cities and their populations? (pg. 16 BIP)

3d  What is Malthus' theory on population? What is the Cornucopian theory? Which one do you think is more right? Defend your opinion. (pg. 13 BIP)
