Something Ive been thinking about lately is the rate of speed of various historical genres in art and how that rate seems to have accelerated.

If one looks at art history in total, from the middle ages until current time, the various dividing lines between periods grow closer and closer as you move through the 19th and 20th centuries. Classical art Byzantine, middle ages, the Renaissance, Romanticism, Realism etc. moved at a snails pace comparatively speaking. From 1870 on, things sped up rapidly, some genres happening simultaneously. From 1970 to today, its a blur.

It does make me wonder if some types and styles of art were not given a fair shake and the art worlds attention span was too short in many cases.

What happened that made things speed up and caused the time spans of these various genres to grow shorter through time? Was it a collection of various reasons or one main thing? What is the name for the current "genre of the moment" or does it even have a name?

I think these are two different concepts. I see art or the fine arts as the best of the multiple cultural expressions representative in a deeper sense of a certain time and a certain enviroment.

I think these are two different concepts. I see art or the fine arts as the best of the multiple cultural expressions representative in a deeper more general sense of a certain period Romanticism, Realism, Parnasianism, Modernism, etc and a certain enviroment. Art and with it the very concept of what is art changes acompany the other cultural changes. It may be beautiful or/and grotesc, harmonious or jarring, translate fullness as well as emptiness of feelings...
Decoration IMO may be artistical or not. There are different styles of decoration. Decoration is strongly related to space and to those that own and/or inhabit this space. I may enjoy a famous painting in a museum or an art catalogue, but that doesnґt always mean that I want to have that picture hanging in my drawing room.

The fun and weird thing about art history is that the "classical" period Greek, Roman, Baroque etc. is remembered because the works are protected by large buildings. Metal and marble survived. Most of human history happened pre-writing, and frankly most art was probably portable, and decayed quickly, like body painting, textiles, wooden shields. All these people who are getting tattoos, and practicing body modification are canvasses for a very ancient art form.

Yes and No. It depends on how accurate the artist was in his interpitation of the scene or event. If the artist fantisised or romantisized the piece it could give a ddistorted view of that period. I would use art as one part of research also using written discriptions and use several sources if possible. Of course this is just my oppionion and being a history buff I like to document my facts.
